Pricey, but keeps drinks cold
I’ve been using one of these for over five years now, when they were still Contigo. Initially I used them for water, but the past couple of years I’ve been drinking seltzer water.
PROs:
- excellent insulation - I’ve left ice water in one of these in my car overnight, and it still has ice in the morning.
- like the lock feature
- can use for carbonated beverages (without sugar only, see below) that would make a fountain if put in a bottle with a straw.
- watertight for at least a couple of years - and the “stopper” on the inside keeps it closed against even pressurized drinks.
- stainless bottle with large mouth lets me put ice in.
- bottle also can take a beating - I’ve dropped my current bottle hard at least half a dozen times (once falling off the trunk as I left work) and, although the lower edges can get a little beat up, it is still pretty stable. Its predecessor did finally fall sideways hard enough to leave the inner bottle almost touching the outer part, but it took years of daily use and abuse to get there.
- according to directions with current bottle, the lid is dishwasher safe, and I run it through every 3 weeks or so.
CONs:
- it is impossible to get the lid really clean. I’ve gone in with pointy swabs and toothpicks to try to loosen the inevitable biofilm that forms inside its complicated innards, even when the stopper is flipped down. BUT - remember that that biofilm is made is a mix of bacteria and fungi who live on surfaces, at low temperatures, eating minute amounts of compounds from our beverages and our saliva, and are NOT human pathogens. The lids can also be sanitized in the dishwasher.
- they do eventually leak. Even my first bottle (I’m on #3 now) eventually leaked, around the locking mechanism, from the vent, and a little from the seal around the base of the lid. But it takes a long time with non-carbonated drinks.
